Definition
Genetics is the study of Heredity, Genes, and Variation. It involves the passing down of traits from parents to offspring through the transmission of genetic information. Geneticists examine the relationship between Genotype (the genetic makeup) and Phenotype (the physical expression of a Trait).
History
The concept of Genetics dates back to ancient civilizations, where people observed patterns in birthmarks and other Physical Characteristics that were thought to be inherited. In 1865, Gregor Mendel conducted groundbreaking research on pea plants, discovering the fundamental principles of inheritance, including the laws of segregation and independent assortment.
Theories
