James Warren Deane
Early Life and Education
James Warren Deane was born on September 19, 1934, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He is an American historian and academic administrator who served as the President of Lafayette College from 2006 to 2012.
Deane earned his Bachelor’s degree in History from Harvard University in 1957, and his Master’s degree in History from Harvard in 1960. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in History from Harvard in 1964 under the guidance of Stephen Runciman.
Academic Career
Deane began his academic career at Amherst College, where he taught courses in history for over 20 years before joining Lafayette College in 1986 as the Professor of History. During his tenure at Lafayette, Deane served as the Chair of the Department of History and has been a member of several advisory committees, including the American Historical Association.
In addition to his academic career, Deane has also held various administrative positions at Lafayette College. He was the Provost from 1992 to 2004 and then became the President in 2006. Under his leadership, Lafayette College underwent significant changes, including the adoption of a new strategic plan and the development of a comprehensive diversity and inclusion initiative.
Research and Scholarship
Deane’s research interests focus on medieval and early modern European History, with particular emphasis on the social and economic aspects of life during this period. He has published numerous articles and books in reputable academic journals and has served as a consultant to various institutions and organizations.
One of Deane’s most notable scholarly achievements is his work on the Medieval Trade Guilds in England during the 14th century. His book, “Guilds and Government in Medieval Europe,” was published in 2006 and is considered a seminal work in the field of Medieval History.
Administration
Deane served as the President of Lafayette College from 2006 to 2012. During his tenure, he implemented several significant changes, including the establishment of new academic programs, the development of a comprehensive diversity and inclusion initiative, and the adoption of a new strategic plan for the college.
Under Deane’s leadership, Lafayette College experienced rapid growth and increased its reputation as an institution of higher learning. He also worked to improve the college’s relationship with the local community, including through the establishment of partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
